Ever since Marc Miller has stepped into his role as the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, there have been a lot of new changes - one of which is to remove additional points for a job offer letter; LMIA.
Earlier, an applicant could be granted either 50 or 200 additional points on the basis of having a job offer supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). However, the system was exploited and LMIAs were bought and sold illegally to help increase the chances of receiving an invite which defeats the purpose of why LMIAs were first introduced in 2014. an LMIA was designed to help address the need of a foreign worker.
According to Marc Miller's statement, this policy is an important step to take to not only reduce fraud but also ensure that everyone has a fair chance of being evaluated based on their experience, language skills and family ties.
Who will it affect?
Let's breakdown the article and understand what the main key points are:
LMIAs will no longer grant you additional points from Spring 2025 onwards.
This change will come into effect in spring 2025.
This will not affect any applicants who have already received an invite or have an application in progress.
This will affect applicants who have a valid job offer but have not received an invite yet, applicants who have not submitted their Express Entry profile yet and applicants who are working in Canada temporarily.
“We are taking important steps to reduce fraud while continuing to attract the skilled talent our economy needs. Immigration has always been a cornerstone of Canada’s success, and we remain committed to welcoming the best and brightest to Canada so that everyone has access to the quality jobs, homes and supports they need to thrive." – The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship
